Aids and Adaptations Standard

How do I get help?

If your home is owned by Waltham Forest Council and you or someone else you live with finds it difficult to get around, or is having difficulty within their home such as bathing, problems with stairs etc, you may be able to get help to maintain or improve your independence. There are a wide range of aids and adaptations available.

Some of the adaptations which can be installed:

Examples of minor work

  • simple ramps
  • half steps
  • metal support rails
  • additional hand-set for an intercom

Other internal changes

  • level internal door threshold strips
  • kitchen lever taps
  • kitchen cupboard handles
  • bathroom lever taps
  • Toilet flush handles
  • door and wall protectors
  • alter heights of power points and electric sockets
  • alter height of kitchen cupboards

If the adaptation is a major adaptation eg shower installation, stair lifts or a major redesign of the property, this will be passed to the long term Occupational Therapy team. Your name will be placed onto another waiting list from the date of their initial referral. The waiting time for an assessment is up to 6 months depending on the urgency of your needs.

Examples of major work

  • stair lifts
  • through floor lifts
  • level access showers
  • extensive ramps
