Budgeting loans

The Department of Work and Pensions offer a a Budgeting Loan which allows the receiver to pay for essential things like rent, furniture, clothes or hire purchase debts. These loans are only available to benefit recipients and you can borrow as little as £100. To apply for one of the loans visit your nearest Jobcentre.

If you are on a low income, the Social Fund may be able to help you with certain one-off or occasional expenses. If you meet the conditions, the Social Fund can provide funeral payments, maternity grants, budgeting loans and cold weather payments. These are administered by the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP).

Until 1 April 2013, the Social Fund could also pay community care grants and crisis loans but these have now been abolished. They were replaced by different welfare assistance schemes and advance payments of benefit which are administered locally by the Council. Contact the Income Maximisation team on 020 8496 4197 or email income.maximisation@walthamforest.gov.uk for further advice.”
